All experts in their own fields, our small team has over 160 years of experience between them and real passion for the benefits of Learning Outside the Classroom. All of our instructors have enhanced DBS checks and relevant First Aid qualifications.
Head Ranger | Maddy
Having spent my childhood on Lulworth’s beaches, it’s hugely rewarding to be able to share this amazing area with others. From formal or experiential teaching to opportune ‘highlights’ that come each day when you’re working alongside nature in the great outdoors.
I’ve been able to conserve the landscape, natural resources and habitats here at Lulworth, balancing those needs with our visitors who’d like to see and experience them. Being a natural water-baby by the sea just puts the icing on the top.
Maddy has the following qualifications:
- BSc Geographical Science
- Diploma in Agronomy, FACTS
- Accredited Practitioner – Institute of Outdoor Learning
Education Ranger | Derry
Coming originally from New Zealand, I have a great affinity with the outdoors and the way they can be used as a medium for not just learning core curriculum subjects, but also as a catalyst in creating the values needed for a sustainable future.
I moved to the UK after living in various localities around the world, but count myself as a very lucky person to be based on the Jurassic Coast, teaching thousands of students every year about the uniqueness of Lulworth and the wider area of Dorset.
I have a passion for geology, fossils and a range of outdoor pursuits that enable me to experience some of the lesser seen areas of the UK.
Derry has the following qualifications:
- Bachelor of Outdoor Education and Adventure Recreation
- NPTC Diploma in Work Based Environmental Conservation
Countryside Ranger | Kirsten
I love the outdoors, but didn’t consider a career in the countryside until later in life. Learning to care for what was on my doorstep when growing up fed a desire to contribute to conserving those habitats I had developed a love for.
This was strengthened by studying Countryside Management at University in my late twenties. Not only does the ‘green gym’ keep me fit, I feel happier that during my lifetime I am doing something useful with a view to a healthier planet.
Kirsten has the following qualifications:
- ND Natural History Illustration
- HND in Countryside Management
Visitor Services Ranger | Jim
As a keen naturalist with excellent communication skills, I have an ability to evoke others interests in the outdoors by sharing my passion for it.
I volunteer as a Coastguard allowing me to contribute to the local community and use my knowledge of our stunning coastline in a productive way.
Particular interest include ornithology, lepidoptera, cycling and bread making.
Jim has the following qualifications:
- BSc Countryside Management
- NPTC qualifications in Countryside Skills
Outdoor Activities and Field Studies Tutor | Steve
Having spent the best part of almost two decades working as an outdoor activities practitioner I have had the pleasure of working all around the world with thousands of clients. I utilise my knowledge of the global landscape to bring a working appreciation of the physical processes involved in its creation.
I also love cats.
Steve has the following qualifications:
- BSc Physical Geography
- Level 3 award in Education and Training
Visitor Services / Admin | Liz
I work in the Visitor Centre and take pride in having knowledge of the village and local area having been born and raised here. It is my pleasure to ensure our visitors get the most out of their visit, sharing my expertise and advising on the many walks or accessible places along this beautiful, rugged coastline.
In my spare time I am a keen wildlife and conservation volunteer with a specific interest in Bats, I am a licensed bat worker and spend many hours (usually at night) researching and monitoring these fascinating mammals. When weather permits you will otherwise find me in the water, being a snorkel instructor and qualified diver I love to spend time studying the immense variety of marine life that blesses our planet.
Liz has the following qualifications:
- Snorkel Instructor
- L2 Bat Survey License
Ranger | Alex
I grew up on the Jurassic coast collecting rocks and fossils and I always have at least one rock in my pocket.
I worked as an outdoor instructor in the first ‘eco-centre’ where outdoor activities promote an appreciation and care for the natural world. After taking a geology degree the lure of the Jurassic rocks bought me back to Dorset and I love showing it to people.
From classroom teaching to coasteering to dinosaur sleepovers there are so many ways to share the coast. I am lucky to get lots of opportunities to broaden my geological knowledge – as the saying goes ‘the best geologist is the one that has seen the most rocks’.
Alex has the following qualifications:
- BSc Geology
- BTec Sport (Outdoor Education)
- Woodbadge Scout Leader Qualification
