The Lulworth Grassland Project
The Lulworth Grassland Project is an estate-wide ecological project funded entirely by the Lulworth Estate. The project is committed to maintaining the diversity of habitats on the Estate and maximising the value of these habitats for as many species of flora and fauna as possible. A major research programme helps to identify species and record the changes and differences in those species in grassland habitats. In-house livestock allows flexibility in grazing on key sites across the Estate. Hardy ponies and cattle are used for their ability to eat coarse grasses and scrub. Several miles of new fencing has allowed livestock grazing for the first time in decades on some long-abandoned sites. The project is managed by the ranger service and employs four graduate ecological surveyors each summer. Their skills and enthusiasm benefit the project enormously whilst they leave with a wealth of experience and an enriched C.V.
