Rocks and Landforms

Key Stages 3, 4 AS and A2

Lulworth is part of the 'Jurassic Coast' World Heritage Site.  It is a superb location to study sedimentary rocks and landforms.  Limestones, sandstones and clays are easily visible and clearly reflected in the local landscape of caves, arches, stacks and coves.

The session begins at the Heritage Centre with an introductory slide show followed by a hands-on investigation of the five types of rock found at Lulworth.  The Ranger will explain how the rocks were formed and the conditions, which affected their disposition.  The dramatic forces of plate tectonics that resulted in folding will be discussed.  Erosion and weathering processes will be clearly described.

The Ranger will then walk the group around the area looking in detail at the formation of Stair Hole and Lulworth Cove.  Time for field sketching can be incorporated into the session if requested.

Some of the topics, which may be covered, include:

  • Geology

  • Sedimentary rocks

  • Plate tectonics

  • Processes of coastal erosion

  • The creation of landforms

  • The future evolution of the coast

  • The impact of the geology on local buildings

The seasonal and site related nature of many of the topics mean that the exact content of the tour may vary.  Your individual requirements can be accommodated by prior arrangement.  Sessions can be blended together if required, for example Rocks and Landforms with Tourism and Management.

Schools wishing to follow this session by walking to Durdle Door can do so independently.

Rocks & Landforms.....plus Durdle Door
