Lulworth KS1 and KS2 Minitour Half and Full Day Programmes Available. The Minitour has a flexible format and provides a general introduction to Lulworth giving an insight to the many special features of the area. The rangers will use their expertise and local knowledge to maximise the value and enjoyment of every session. Your individual requirements and timetables can be accommodated by prior arrangement. Half Day (2 hour) Session The session begins at the Heritage Centre with an introductory slide show followed by a hands-on investigation of the five types of rock found at Lulworth and their role in the development of the Cove. The tour continues to Stair Hole and Lulworth Cove and may include aspects of any of the following topics: Coastal scenery and landforms Basic geology The seasonal and site related nature of many of the topics mean that the exact content of the tour may vary with the time of year. Additional Sessions (1.5/2hrs) For a day visit schools can choose from the following options after a lunch break. Durdle Door walk - starting and ending at the Heritage Centre, this walk takes in further classic landforms and coastline, a look at downland wildlife and includes a visit to a bronze age burial mound. Topics discussed include any of the above to suit requirements. Practical data collection and activities session (KS2 only) - Sediment size and distribution. Pupils look at the sediment size at up to 6 sites across the Cove taking and recording sample measurements. They also investigate the different characteristics of the pebbles they find. Habitats and Ecology - Focusing on either of 2 key habitats at Lulworth, rocky shores (tide dependent) and chalk downland (summer term only), pupils will investigate the habitat and look at what lives there and why, discussing food chains, food webs, adaptations, populations and conservation. The session will begin with a short introductory talk about each habitat and follow with field activities. These activities make use of our onsite facilities, historical monuments and natural features and can be ranger led or the resources can be purchased by the teachers to run themselves.
