The Fossil Forest

The Fossil Forest is an amazing example of fossils left behind by trees millions of years ago. The 'tufa' are fossilised rings of algae that gathered around tree trunks as the forest flooded nearly 150 million years ago. Much of the wood has been eroded by the weather or taken in the past by fossil hunters, but the huge tufa remain.

How to get there: Parking is at the main pay and display Lulworth Cove Car Park. Walk around Lulworth Cove and take the steps up the cliff on the eastern side of the beach. Follow the Range Walk south (by turning right at the Range Gate) until you reach the steps to Fossil Forest. Fossil Forest is within the Army Range and is open most weekends and in August. Please check our information on opening and closing times.
