Access And Rights Of Way

Public Rights of Way and Permissive Routes

Family Walkers at Lulworth Walkers at Hambury Lulworth

The Estate is committed to increasing public access on the coast. Footpaths and steps are maintained by the Estate, in conjunction with Dorset County Council 'Rights Of Way Department' and the Countryside Agency. Tenant farmers have taken the opportunity to create 'open access areas' within their farms to extend the countryside available for you to enjoy. (see recreational activities)

Walk Guides and maps are available from Lulworth Heritage Centre and Durdle Door Holiday Park. (see publications)

Hambury Tout footpath (shown above) is the busiest stretch of footpath in the south-west. Over 200,000 people a year use it to walk between Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door. It was surfaced in 1998 using traditional methods of stone pitching to reduce the severe erosion, alleviate drainage problems and to make the surface safer for walkers.
