Public Access and Footpaths
The Estate is committed to increasing public access on the coast. Footpaths and steps are maintained by the Estate in conjunction with Dorset County Council Rights of Way and the Countryside Agency. Tenant farmers have taken the opportunity to create "open access areas" within their working farms to extend the countryside available for you to enjoy. A leaflet showing public rights of way, open access, permissive paths and illustrated walk guides are available from the Heritage Centre. Hambury Tout footpath (shown above) is the busiest stretch of coast path in the south-west used by over 250,000 walkers each year. In 1998 it was surfaced using traditional methods of stone pitching to reduce the severe erosion, drainage problems and to make the surface safer for walkers.
